Generic, uninspired, plodding. Like all science fiction these days it all looks the same as any other movie. Nothing original or interesting. If you liked the novel you won't care about the movie. If you never read the novel you'll be bored. Watch the trailer for 150 minutes and you've seen it. Plus it's only the first half of the first book.

Some shockingly bad acting and the budget clearly didn't go into the script. Casting Star Wars man and Superwaterman guy was obviously because they needed some names to draw an audience. They both played themselves, the same as they do in every movie. Ex-wrestler guy was barely in it so he was less noticeable.

It wasn't egregious with the pushing of minority and women characters front and center but it was obvious they had to do it and to make them all the good guys even when it wasn't necessary.

I don't know what rating they were aiming for but it was shamefully tame. A little bit of blood in a few scenes but all deaths were safe for basically any audience. All the fighting was formulaic and the army invasion scene was like Star Wars with more sand.

I wanted to like it and had hopes that it'd be at least watchable. A couple of scenes were ok but nothing worth sitting through the whole thing for. Denis Villeneuve was a bad choice but chances are it could've been worse with anyone else at the helm.

Never read the book. Never saw the Lynch film - in fact, if any fellow Cinema friends brought it up, I'd immediately tune out. I don't hate Kyle McLachlan, Sting or Lynch. I don't even hate Brian Eno. But, I took one look at that film poster as a young man, and something in my head just said, "Yeah, I never want to see that."

I saw one commercial for the new version online - by the time it finished, I had the same visceral reaction to it that I had with the (admittedly rather nicely designed) Dune poster from 1984: I will not waste my time seeing this fucking thing, regardless of the great director (Villeneuve in this case).

I mean, at least it's not a Marvel movie... And yet I feel it's still going to be like a Marvel movie. Fucking Christ, I hate modern Hollywood.

You're correct about it being a Marvel movie without it being a Marvel movie. It often felt like they were just introducing characters so you'd know exactly who they are rather than letting the story unfold. It was very safe and formulaic.

I'm not a Villeneuve fan so that might have played into my disdain for the movie. The Lynch version I really enjoy for how wacky it feels. I don't actually like Lynch's movies even though they should be right up my alley. Admittedly I've only watched the more popular movies of his. I'm a fan of his haircut though.

Lynch is conservative, which I like. The latest Twin Peaks only had 1 black character and she was a prostitute with like 2 scenes lol.

Also Agent Cooper is a main character who's actually good and a winner. He isn't some anti-hero faggot, or morally ambiguous, or good but a loser. When do you ever see that in jewish media? The good characters, even if they're protagonists, are always losers.

I just started getting into the books and after the first chapter I knew it wasn't going to be a good movie no matter who directed or wrote it. The next best thing you could do is a series, and I've seen parts of that, I think Sci-Fi did one.

Throw a Game of Thrones budget at it, get some good writers, understand it's going to go on forever and get some good unknowns in there and you could have a gem on your hands.

Best just to read the books and use your imagination though, tough as that is for some people.
