I have been divorced and single for over a year, I haven't been looking for anyone. A beautiful middle aged woman approached me asking me for shopping help and we got talking, she seemed overly very excited. Maybe I'm just hoping, it seemed natural just how she was and life as a single teacher (was that a hint?). I took the leap and asked for her number and she was keen to give it.

She carried on shopping, smiled at me and told me to keep in touch. But now I'm a nervous 40 odd year old man who made a call a week later and bottled it before she answered. I really don't want to mess this up, I honestly don't have a clue how to make this work. I don't really see her as a hookup, I really want to see if we can build something.

Any advice?

So basically what you're saying is that you're looking for love but are afraid for the possible rejection and the person leaving you?

I had the same issue as you're describing. I was afraid that if I met someone I liked they would leave me once they got to know who the real me is. I knew this was going to be an issue in every relationship I would get myself into and would always tell myself I am destined to stay single.

One day I was watching a documentary on ID and it all clicked. I figured out that people can't leave you if they are physically incapable of doing so. What I can tell you from experience is that people have a pretty hard time leaving you if they are chained up to a radiator in your basement.

I've been in a loving relationship for over 3 years now since this epiphany.
