What are the house prices?

For the most part, Oregon offers the best combination of "good weather" and "low prices" on the west coast, IMHO.

The thing that ruins it is that they also have some of the highest taxes in the country, nearly as bad as New Jersey.

The "trick" is to live in Southern Washington:

Basically, in the 1990s, Microsoft pioneered a tax scheme where they would give their employees stock instead of money. I would need to Google the details, but based on what people have told me, the main reason that Microsoft did this scheme was to offset their corporate taxes.

IE:

  • If Microsoft paid their employees in nothing but cash, Microsoft had to pay taxes on all the compensation
  • If Microsoft paid their employees in a combination of cash and stock, the employees became responsible for paying taxes on the stock.
An analogy:

If you work for me and I own a restaurant, I could pay you $25 an hour for 8 hours a day and I have to pay taxes on $200. (8 hours x $25.) If I pay you $20 an hour and give you $40 a day in free food, I don't have to pay taxes on the food.

Due to this tax scheme, and the fact that Amazon, Microsoft, Boeing, AT&T Wireless, T-Mobile, Microsoft, Facebook, etc have offices in Washington, and many are located in Washington, the state has extremely low taxes - ZERO.

So, yeah, that's the hot ticket.

You buy a house in Southern Washington, and if you need to buy shit, you cross the border to Oregon. Oregon has batshit insane income taxes (their entire economy is built on Nike) but Oregon has zero sales tax, because apparently sales tax is racist or something.

If you can deal with a lot of rain, I think it's a lovely place to live.

I got tired of the rain and moved to Nevada, but I still think the area is nice, I just wish they'd kill all the homeless people.

If anyone is interested in living in either state I can provide plenty of info, I've lived in both states multiple times.

I don't know that they care about saving money but yeah

Literally all of the ACAB shit exists so that mid level managers in cities can keep their pensions and their big paychecks.

In Portland, DEI jobs pay nearly $200,000 a year and cops make $80K a year.

The folks with the DEI jobs understand that if they can get two cops fired, that "frees up" money for their departments. They're not stupid, they're just grifters.

It looks like Portland no longer allows you to search for jobs and sort based on pay, but when they did, all of the best paying jobs were DEI consultants. Mid level DEI consultants have salaries that rival members of congress. Nancy Pelosi has a salary of $193,400.

Here's a state DEI job in California for $220K:
