People actually believe the "underground railroad" was an actual tunnel system underground.

There was some historic house in the village I went to school in that was allegedly a stop on the underground railroad (chuggachugga). Or something. I honestly still don't fully understand the whole underground railroad thing. My teacher trying to get us to understand that there aren't train tracks under the house was like an Abbott and Costello bit. "So there's like a subway that goes all the way to America under the house?" "So the train is made out of black people?"
I also remember having to go see some one woman show about Harriet Tubman one time. The most memorable part was the lady said "jigaboo" at one point and the place fucking erupted in laughter from all the kids. People kept saying it on the bus back to school and the teacher flipped out on us. "IT'S NOT SOME FUNNY SOUNDING WORD YOU CAN JUST SAY! IT'S A RACIAL SLUR!"
