I completely forgot that Norton's signature bit (Monster Rain) was literally introduced to the show because Opie happened to hear it live.
Norton's career arc has been so strange:
- When they were on WNEW, he really didn't contribute a whole lot. I kinda got the impression that they let him on the show as a favor to Andrew Dice Clay. Basically promoting Norton the same way that they promoted the music from Dice's kid (which nobody wanted to hear either.)
- When the show premiered on XM, it was really obvious that Opie had an axe to grind with Howard Stern, and was trying to figure out ways to one-up him. A lot of the early shows were fixated on being "shocking." They used to have cornball bits, like Ramone shitting in his pants. They weren't funny; a big part of Norton taking over the "Ramone" bit was because he was satirizing how UNFUNNY the entire thing was.
- But Opie figured out that Norton's crazy hooker stories made for great radio. The story where the prostitute stole Norton's glasses is an all-timer.
So there was a window of about 10-15 years, from 1998-ish until 2013-ish, where Norton's escapades were genuinely shocking, and
those are the years he was reluctant to talk about them. You could totally see that Norton wasn't keen to divulge details. He's referenced that time that a hooker shit on his chest, but when he first told the story, you could tell he didn't want to talk about it
at all.
But in 2024, when nobody gives a single fuck about his tranny sex life, NOW he suddenly wants to tell the entire world.
