What was the worst Sopranos episodes?

That episode is worth it for Paulie looking like the goomba he is. Him saying "commendatori" never fails to make me laugh.

The worst one for me is when the actor playing Livia died and they decided to create a CGI version. That was fucking atrocious.

Besides whats already been said, In Camelot gets mentioned a lot in this discussion but theres some essential stuff in there re: Tonys feelings on his father.

Some of those Vito in NH episodes weren't tnat great.

The Columbus episode was hilarious. I don't get the hate for it. It's funny as hell and the best take down of identity politics TV has ever done.

"A Hit is a Hit" is terrible, but I can't go too hard on it because it was season 1 and the show was still figuring out how much of a comedy and satire it would be.

The stuff with Vito in NH was terrible, but I can't think of the episode that was the worst. It just dragged on too long and took too much focus in the final season.

I'm going to say "Eloise" from season 4. It had the great moment where Paulie kills the malignant cunt, but the episode was mostly about Furio and Carmella's love, which was the worst reoccurring plotline in the whole show.

Agree with all the opinions here to a certain degree. There's certain subplots and moments that stunk. When my grandpa was still alive, we were watching the show and on the episode after Bobby's wife dies when Janice was trying to get Bobby to heat up Karen's zitti, he changed the channel and said "Sometimes this show is so fucking stupid." Makes me smile whenever I think of what a low tolerance for bullshit he had.

The Vito gay shit and the dream sequence/out of body coma experience segments also dragged on for way too long.

Bar a few moments, seasons 6 is so fucking dull and scatterbrained.

Although I do like the dream sequences to a point since they reveal a lot of unsaid shit about Tony, they invested way too much fucking time into the Test Dream.

That is part of the point of season six. You are meant to feel depressed like Tony. Hence the show giving you almost no motivation to keep watching. It is meant to be a drag to watch the show. Almost exhausting to binge watch it. There are less humorous moments, everything is shot with dull lightning, the deaths are brutal and not comical anymore. The lightning changes from the first to last seasons are glaring when you binge watch the show.

In the first few seasons the deaths are almost slapstick hilarious. When Mikey throws Rusty Irish off of the bridge I laugh every single time. When Pauly shoots Mikey because the poison ivy is irritating him. The entirety of Pine Barrens. Even the episode where Pussy dies is called Fun House.

The later seasons the deaths are vicious. Eugene hanging himself. Vito (deservedly) being beaten to death. Teddy the fat man being executed while eating. Christopher being suffocated. Adriana being whacked. Bobby getting gunned down while daydreaming about toy trains. JT being murdered for basically no reason.

The last season is meant to be dull because a lot of depressed people describe life as dull. So the boring elements of the show are magnified to draw you into the mentality of Tony. How he has dulled his senses and let his guard down. Which a lot of people think signifies him being clipped in the diner in the last scene. Because his guard is down and he is not aware of his assassin.

Massive genius or Boca. The whole coach hauser storyline felt like a "very special episode" and was out of place for the show.
The coach episode was used to develop Tony as a character. He has to resist all urges to kill the guy. He then does and proceeds to get obliterated in order to cope with doing what he thinks is a bad thing. Not killing the pedophile. That being said A Hit is a Hit is dog shit but it was earlier on so whatever. I’ve always hated the dream sequences. Scattered throughout the series they’re not bad but “Test Dream” or whatever the fuck is too long. Meanwhile there’s tons of potential for the buscemi storyline throughout that episode. I’d assume that was done intentionally. Point being we get it. They’re very allegorical.

Buscemi character Tony B was originally going to survive into Season Six and they had more for him. Robert Logia was supposed to be a main antagonist but had to drop out due to medical reasons. So David Chase took the entire Tony B story and jammed it into one season and they quietly wrote off the Feech character. They killed Tony B instead because it felt more realistic and gave them a complete storyline with the Feech one being abruptly abandoned.

Big Pussy was supposed to disappear forever but was brought back for Season Two to fully resolve the storyline. In Season One there is a deleted scene where Pussy sells heroin to an undercover FBI agent and turns informant in the box.

"Can I just get some macaroni and gravy?" While the Italians are making fun of him in Italian.

"T, you give this guy a golf club he'll probably try and fuck it"

"I'm gonna hoof it back to the Excelsior. I gotta take a wicked shit."

I've listened to a few with commentary and it's funny how theyll just write anything to make an episode just because an actor wasn't available that day. The whole episode where Ralph tells the fat joke about JS wife was a piece of shit that Chase just went ahead and approved. The sopranos is like live action Simpsons

That's what annoyed me about the Vito stuff in season 6. In addition to wasting too much with him in NH with Johnny Cakes, it was basically the Tony B story over again: there's a guy in the Soprano crew that the Shah of Iran wants dead, for matters of family honor. And if the Soprano family doesn't cooperate, there will be hell to pay.

I think the reason they made it about Vito was because gay marriage was a big controversy back then and they wanted to make a story about gay persecution. But it was awkward because Vito is a criminal scumbag like every other mobster, he isn't a good vessel for sympathy.

By the way, Bush era politics are also why they shoehorned that Evangelical preacher when Tony was in the hospital. A Prostestant was completely out of place there. Almost every character on the show was a Catholic, the rest were Jews. But they needed to take jabs at the GOP.
