When the show came to K-Rock, there was pretty big ratings that first book, then it dropped off because of things like Twitchel and Big A read the news for 30 mins. Did the staff know this was a downward spiral or did people go in expecting those ratings to continue?

Was this lazy shit really due to CBS's cautiousness? If so, what were some of the bits that got shot down? And were there any bits that the production staff thought of that got spiked by the hosts?

There was no "cautiousness". They just pretended to have these invisible handcuffs on and pretended they couldn't do a real show if they couldn't say fuck and shit. The politics were boring and CBS producer "Stuntbrain" was fucking awful. Anthony was constantly distracted by PalTalk and Opie thought spending an hour on cat noises once a week was the ticket to unlimited success.

There was no one bit that turned the show, it was a combination of egos, poor management, and a sharp disconnect between the hosts and their audience. O&A were fun to listen to on WNEW because they were just regular long island guys. Once the big money started coming in they thought they could coast on the show's name recognition alone. Caddy and HVAC stories turned into six-figure casino stories and Opie hiring a man-servant in Kenny. These were not the same two guys who blew up on WNEW.

That said, I'd rest most of the blame on Opie. He simply refused any and all criticism. You couldn't say to him, "Hey Op, the Cat Noise thing has run it's course, let's rest that a while." Even though you were a Prodcuer and your job was to consult the hosts on content choices, you weren't allowed to. Opie would go through his whole I been in radio since I'm 18, yada yada...and he would get his away after he threatened your job. Or in cases like Derek, you were fired for trashing his YouTube videos, which were and still are embarrassingly awful.
