Goodfellas (1990)

I always find it funny how Martin Scorcese casts goys as jewish people in his movies, even though there's no shortage of jewish actors in Hollywood.
The moral of the story is meant to be that the mob life isn't as cool as Henry glamorized it to be in the first half of the film, but the only reason shit went south was because he went awol and started doing his own thing. Although Jimmy may have gone too far in some places.

Casino was the first Scorsese film I saw. This scene at the end, (it all comes crashing down like a house of cards) with the house of the rising sun playing in the background, was the only thing I watched that made me "envy" movie directing. Such a beautiful depiction and use of the artform to its max.

Would you want to work with jews when you could work with Whites? Yeah you could cast ugly monsters in your films or have DiCaprio and Margot Robbie or whatever. Easy choice when you can make it.

Henry Hill was never in the mafia. Neither were Jimmy nor Tommy. They were their own gang that never wanted to be in the mafia in the first place. Jimmy Burke lead the most successful heist in history with Lufthansa. They didn't need the mafia nor protection from the Italians. In real life Tommy was not lured to a fake making ceremony to be killed over whacking Billy Bats. He was killed because he threatened to rape Karen Hill and she slept with Paul Vario as payment for the killing.

Henry turned himself into the FBI because Jimmy was whacking everyone to keep their shares of the money. Plus the coke was making Henry extra paranoid as well. Hill was big into point shaving college sports and that was what the FBI ended up getting from him for the most part aside from the big heist and a few murders.

Goodfellas is a good movie, maybe even great, but it's not historically accurate at all. I find I like it less and less when I read about the real events.

Nigga, you couldn't be more wrong. Your take is Patrick level.

Henry and Jimmy Burke couldn't be full members, but they were associates who were expected to kick up to the Vario crew-- Tommy could have been made but he was too much of a loose cannon and way too young at tge time he was murdered to be under serious consideration (he was in his late 20's and tge books were barely open when he was murdered-- and because of books being closed after 57' until around 77' or so (after Carlo Gambino's death in August of 76'), most guys getting Made were already in their late 30's to early 50's.

That said, Henry and Burke operated within the Luchesse family, they rubbed elbows and worked with other families- Burke especially may as well have been a made man as he basically had his own crew and lot power. People simply didn't fuck with him. Henry was more of an outsider and more of a flim/flam and s am guy who got heavily into drugs. He also had a knack for being a fly on the wall and knowing most mob business within the family and he was genuinely liked by Paul Vario.

DeSimone, while not completely useless (in on Lufthansa Heist) was far too much of a liability (killing multiple made men) and too unpredictable. The only thing really exaggerated in the film is that it's not entirely clear he was set up by a fake making ceremony and whether or not his own people got him or if it was the Gambino's with Tommy Agro and John Gotti taking the lead.

There are and were guys who definitely who were in the mafia who were not made men, but they have been because of the power they weilded and connections they had. It's like thinking Al Pacino (Lefty Ruggerio) a soldier in the Bonano family had more power on the streets than Jimmy Burke. Don't forget that Gotti was a capo for the Carmine Fatico crew at the Bergin Hunt & Fish club without actually being a made member.

Henry and Jimmy barely knew Paul Vario. The idea that they were running anything for him is pure revisionism. Hill was a junkie and liar who wrote all sorts of tall tales and wild stories to sell more books and scripts. Vario had nothing to do with their biggest heists either nor did he have anything to do with the point shaving. They were not kicking anything up to Vario outside of minor scores. Vario was a known rapist and weirdo and everyone would try to disassociate from him as well. This idea that they had him going to their wedding and hanging around with their families as some guest of honor is hilarious. They tried to stay away from him as much as possible because he had no respect for women including wives and daughters.

Vario had a long term affair with Karen Hill. And didn't offer any protection to Hill from anyone including Jimmy Burke when he started whacking people right and left. Hill is a known liar and was not a mafia insider. He was a junkie loser. Burke was the brains but also a psycho. Burke was banging Tommy's sister as well. These guys constantly mixed business with pleasure.

It was Peter Vario that probably killed him. The whole fake making ceremony and Gotti torture dungeon is just another ridiculous tall tale from Henry Hill who liked to greatly exaggerate all of his stories for his own amusement.

You can't be in the mafia without being made. That's the entire definition. You are not in the mafia as an associate. Someone like Hesh from the Sopranos was never going to get made. Same with Burke or Hill. Wouldn't happen. Burke had a gang that brushed up against the mafia but was mostly separate.

Anyways mafia members are all faggots. Someone like Jeffrey Epstein was raking in billions and working over U.S. Presidents. And these guys are dealing stolen vacuum cleaners and VCRs out of the backs of their vans for pennies. Real genius criminals.

So Meyer Lansky was a powerless faggot? I digress-

Who do you think took Vario down? He wouldn't have been able to do it without being connected to him. If anything, Vario had to be wary of Henry and Jimmy because of their pretty blatant drug dealing.

You're confusing FBI witness/Wiseguy autobiography Hill, to the fucking sloppy disgrace he became after the success of Goodfellas. Don't forget, when these guys flip and proffer, if they get caught in a lie/lies, their deals are generally fucked and the government will not hesitate to renege on them (look at Anthony Gaspipe Casso's deal with the feds that fell apart).

Henry was credible enough to land prosecutions of very powerful mafia guys- and effectively sent Burke and Vario to prison on toe tag parole. That doesn't happen if he's a lying nobody and there's no corroboration from elsewhere--

La cosa nostra was (is?) pretty legit. The imitation US version was pretty gay.
La Cosa Nostra or just Cosa Nostra is the US version. The Otalian Mafia version are a bunch of women/children murdering psychopaths who had pretty much zero code and had no problem killing civilians with bombs and whatever else it took.

While Americans were treacherous, the violence was generally in spasms (consolidating power) and guys getting out of line or being on the wrong end of a power struggle. While civilians got caught in the crossfire, it was certainly rare-- civilians were just mostly juiced by protection rackets and loan sharks due to gambling issues or trying to keep their businesses afloat when banks wouldn't lend the money.

J. Edgar Hoover croaking,RICO, the drugs (cocaine/crack), insanely long prison sentences and guys flipping, completely upended it. Also, the uptick in violence in the 70's and 80's and the government actually enforcing the laws- just gutted all 5 families.

Henry Hill on Stern might be the most bizarre thing I’ve ever heard. Wasn’t he selling a video of him getting fucked in the ass?

I don't think or remember if it was that bad, but he was highly intoxicated during every interview. You can tell he missed the life, started developing a myth around himself, and was pretty bitter at the relatively small amount of money he received for Wiseguy/Goodfellas. I think he received 500k or so and probably pissed it away in a few months.

Every time he was on Stern just weird. He was shitfaced the one morning in studio and asked for a latte or something and Lisa thought he asked to cum on her face. He kept asking for booze the whole time he was on the show.
