Why was the staff bloated? Ask Ben and Erik. Those were guys hired to produce in 2004. Steve was audio/production. Ben was good for dealing with XM/DC and minor guest bookings but that's it. He wasn't coming up with material. Neither was Erik, unless it was a sound clip from last night's Futurama where Fry said "Jimmy!" and Erik thought that was gonna be gangbusters on the show.

I'm saying it's crazy that O & A seemed to have a much larger staff than Rush's show because it's useful to compare to other nationally syndicated shows. Rush's show was bigger and required considerably more research and he didn't have as many staffers as O and A which is crazy.

In reality, it was three large breakfasts of garbage that he'd eat nonstop between 5am and 1pm. Between Steve, Erik and Roland that fucking office was absolutely grotesque.

They made bad hires. Ben didn't contribute to the show's content. Erik didn't contribute to the show's content. Steve made wrap around production. Not content. Now you have three full time hires as of Oct 2004, and NONE of them contribute to show content.

Enter the first interns. Than, Me, Derek. It was abundantly clear the show needed more heads. Somebody needed to be on the board, build breaks, go to commercial, etc. Somebody needed to screen the calls. Somebody needed to be available for Opie's random outbursts when he sees a NJ Housewife on The View and screams "GET THAT GET THAT!" If you listen to super early 2004 XM, Opie is already complaining about how terrible Erik is and doesn't know what he does. That never changed. He was just Opie's "guy" like Kenny. Kenny was 100% unnecessary, but Opie needed to feel important with all "his guys" around him.

Erik should have been nuked in 2005. Ben, while I liked him, didn't really seem to do all too much on the day to day. He could be clipped as well. Steve should have stayed in prod and Derek should have been on the board. Than would have made a good EP and between Travis, Sam and I we have all aspects of show responsibilities covered.

Opie needed "his guys" and Anthony didn't want anything to do with the management of the show.

I don't know what you want. I didn't hang out with Roland. During the show, I was in the studio and Roland was in the back office. After the show, I did what I had to do and went home. I didn't interact with Roland on any meaningful level. Roland was a back office guy with all the other do nothing back office guys. Erik. Sam. Troy. Kenny. Go ask one of those guys for Roland stories, as they all hung out together, all day, every day while everyone else was working on a show.

Usually shows take place in a radio station with other staff members. XM in 2004, we had to fill every live spot. We were the only live show. The other people were Franks Place and some other voice tracked channel. We needed a body on the phones. We needed a body on the board. We needed communication with DC / publicists during the show. That's already three people with nobody available for anything else. Cutting up last night's whatever or something that distracted Opie. There's a person. All these things need to be done and they all need to be done at the same time. I don't care how Rush did his show. This is how we did this show. There was plenty of money flowing for a support staff when you're forking over millions for Rock Scream Tuesdays. Why don't you Monday Morning QB your way back to the ez chair. Fucking 20 years later you're gonna tell me how it should've been. OK.

Don't forget, Than, myself, Travis and Derek didn't get any real salary for over 18 months. We had to basically collectively quit in 2006 in order for XM to fork over what amounted to $275,000/year worth of staff salary which in the grand scheme of things, was nothing for them. If the show could have survived without us, why'd they hire all 4 of us.
