Artie is a legit fag. I think he paid the whores for company and the appearance of whatever (Brooklyn Brawler image he was trying to uphold) and for their drug connections.

His attacks on High Pitch Mike for being gay are some of the funniest moments on the show. Artie was not a closet fag. Just a drug addict and mess. And he was a guy's guy on the show. He would drink and party. Watch and play sports. Guy had an amazing outside basketball shot and could still play baseball well. And you could tell he hated fags deep down and was grossed out by them but he had to hide it because of show business politics. Him being forced by Howard to sponsor an AIDS charity only for the charity to pull it back a few weeks later because of Artie wishing AIDS on High Pitch Mike and yelling for the FBI to confiscate his computer was hilarious. Gary had a brother who died of AIDS so that was always a spot of contention on the show.
Artie once picked up a hooker from a strip club and banged her thinking she was just into him. After sex she said "okay $500" and Artie paid her sheepishly. Artie on a date with a girl passed a bank teller a note saying "give me all your money" as a joke and was arrested. Dude was always a goof. Once he got that Stern money he could have heroin dealers follow him around like personal assistants. And Stern fans would give him coke a lot as well.
There were definitely closet fags on the Stern Show. Like Howard or Ralph or High Pitch Mike. But not Artie. Dude was definitely into women. But more into heroin.

I waffle back and forth on the Artie gay thing, and these are in no particular order:
- Artie "coming out" to George Takei as a prank but sounding genuine and sincere. Artie isn't a very good actor, however he is a very good liar.
- I always thought he looked very awkward around women (like Daner), the few times you actually saw him with one.
- To me, he was more than just a drug addict. His destructiveness and pattern of self-sabotage says that he really hates himself, and it could be any combination of three reasons: hes a closet homo, he still blames himself for his fathers accident, or he helped his father kill himself.
- Those High Pitch Mike fights
- In the aftermath of one of those High Pitch Mike fights, Arties talking about people he knows in show business who are gay and afraid to come out but he started off by saying 'I have issues' before catching himself and saying other people.
- The blow up he had about 'Bloomies.'
- The Queer Eye makeover segment where he got blackout drunk and was essentially begging for those guys to run train on him.
On second thought, it doesn't seem that ambiguous.
