Was the Opie love bit a mistake? I remember people on Reddit thinking it was gonna bother Nana, but then it delved into acting like he actually had any talent. “Steering the ship” was not talent, considering all three suck. They had to rely on outside factors to keep the show working.
More people on the streets of new york know Elliot offen than Opie

Why does he do this to himself? They had some good success. Certainly more than most two-bit shock jocks. Why lie to himself and pretend they were bigger than Howard? Move on man
O&A were probably the most successful of the Stern-inspired radio shock-jocks, but they were never a threat to Jew Boy's supremacy. They developed a pretty decent and vocal following in the NYC market, especially during the period after Jackie quit the HSS and the HSS became un-listenable, but they never seriously threatened to overtake him. And then they completely blew it with the gay Sex For Sam debacle. They did recover and re-invented their show during the "comedian's round table" era, then they fucked that all up too.

Ask any person on the street who Howard Stern is and they will know, ask them who Opie & Anthony are and only a few will know.

I'm not even a Stern fan but those are the facts, O&A where never bigger than Stern, no one was.
I was at a bar last week and was talking to this guy who was a Stern fan back in the early-mid 2000s and I said I was more an OnA guy and just got a blank stare. Also humorously he said he was sure Artie was dead rather than Norm (in a just world)

The fact that Howard Stern never acknowledged them or uttered their names his whole supposed 'feud' with them tells me there really wasn't much of a feud to begin with. He saw them rightfully as ambitious, plagiarizing nobodies that don't deserve free advertisement by his acknowledgement.
He mentioned and slammed them by name quite a few times, usually kicking them when they were down like after the Sex for Sam thing and the SiriusXM merger.

Howie definitely fucked with them behind the scenes with management and the like, so he did consider them to be competition. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if their numbahs were on par at certain times, that doesn't mean that they were anywhere in the same league. They never had the kind of clout and brand image Stern spent years building. O&A were childish dopes and Howard treated himself like a businessman.

It should be telling enough that O&A's worst scandals in the late 90s and 2000s involved them getting shitcanned for doing dumb stunts, while Howie's were about him jewing his employers out of hundreds of millions and getting away with it.

One example that comes to mind is, back when Stern was suing SiriusXM a few years before AntH got fired, management suddenly floated the idea of a big live event to O&A after snubbing them for years. Then they resolve their dispute with HooHoo and coincidentally the live gig idea gets iced, leading to much impotent brooding from the b-b-boys. In hindsight, it's pretty clear the suits were never serious about the event and only purposefully spread that rumor to pressure Stern into accepting a more favorable compromise.

So Howard was duking it out with highest echelon corporate lich kings, having the balls to nickel and dime them and turn it into a big thing, while O&A's only role during this whole conflict was as unwitting cannon fodder, which goes to show how much pull they had with management. They were never on the same level. Even if they had the potential or the resources, they never capitalized on it in the same way Howard did and that crippled them fatally, no matter how many viewers they may have had.
