What’s a good Bible to get

The Catena app is pretty cool. Based on the septuagint, has all the books that the Protestants leave out of their bibles plus commentaries from the church fathers. If you want a hardcover get the Orthodox Study Bible.

He needs to read it straight in the most accessible language for him first, then worry about study companions and interpretations. It makes no difference anyway, as long as you search for the truth with the right motive, it will be revealed to you regardless of any version or denomination.

The truth comes in stages, it seems pretty clear to me that nobody has the authority to gatekeep man’s relationship with God.

The one which I read fully (well, almost) is NIV.

I have it on kindle because it’s just convenient, I have several physical copies in various translations.

NIV is very readable, which is the most important thing imo. At least to begin with. View attachment 218981

For what it's worth you can get an Oxford University Press edition that put a lot of effort into finding the most accurate translations from latin/german/ancient hebrew. Without learning a dead language it's the best you'll find. I have a +100 year old copy with the accompanying Apocrypha which i picked up on ebay for about $15

When I was a Youth Minister, I taught out of the NIV Bible. It's very accessible and maintains the heart and intent of the message; it doesn't water it down and sacrifice the spirit for readability like The Message does.

However, I also would read out of the KJV for myself simply because the language used is beautiful and poetic.

You can also look into daily devotionals, which my wife and I do.

But the most important thing is to PRAY. Above all things, God wants to hear your voice. Reading the Word without prayer is vanity and pointless. God wants a real relationship with you, and like all relationships, it thrives upon communication.

There’s a reason you can stay up super late watching movies or playing games but if you read the Bible you’ll feel sleepy after 5 minutes.

It’s not you, it’s the enemy. I don’t mean that metaphorically I mean a demon is with you and trying to stop you. Overcome, and you’ll long to read more, it becomes exciting to go home to after work like a good book would do.
