But Russia has an elderly dictator who's trying to cement his status alongside imperial greats and China is entering a demographic cliff and economic stagnation while being extremely sensitive to anything that may reflect negatively on the notion that they are 100% in firm control (Taiwan, Winnie the Pooh, etc.) Russia has started to lash out, China is most certainly next. They are going to make a move for Taiwan while also striking every military asset that they can in Japan, Korea, etc.

Thanks for reminding me of that. That’s a good point. For a supposed military power Russia has done a really shitty job of any sort of military action. Sure we suck at actually holding whatever we conquer but we can conquer it pretty quick.

Russia at the time was way too busy handling the Chechens to even attempt to project force all the way in the western Balkans (and that would still've been a difficult decision).

Again, a distracted and exhausted Russia means the Americans can monkey around in its former stomping grounds.
