They approached me to join. It seems like everyone in it at my work are a buncha faggots. Literally all of them. They seem to just use the union to stick up for them so they can be a buncha do nothing losers. Every single person in it is a fat lazy slob. The actual real good professional electricians arent a part of it. They let their hard work speak for them. All the old timers are dropping out because they dont like what the union has become. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice as to WHY i should join? (They represent me regardless whether i pay dues or not). It seems like a waste of $ to me.

Aside from being anti competitive, my issue with unions is you lose your ability to advocate for yourself because they negotiate your pay and benefits.

On the flip side, the employer literally cannot fuck you around because the union will step in and fight tooth and nail on your behalf. They and their lawyers truly are a force to be reckoned with because they fight like old school gangsters.

I imagine they will try to motherfuck you for not joining so be prepared to pivot as needed. I’d join it for the protection and pension but see if I could find a way to become one of the leaders because I have a hard time sitting still and being lazy / bored. Plus I have no qualms about taking bribes and paying people off. That’s just capitalism 101

Im a 2nd year apprentice in the IBEW and after being on a huge mostly non-union site, I see why it’s necessary for them to exist. The working conditions for most non-union construction workers are something that only someone from a 3rd world country or a mental retard would ever tolerate.
Sure there’s the independent dudes that are just masters of their craft and dont need to be in a union but they’re outliers.
Construction should be a career available to all decent middle-class Americans and unions make that possible. I do get the hate though as there are plenty of things about them and the people in them that suck.

I was forced to join the Local 150 Operators union when I was 19 because I couldn't drive a skid steer as a landscaper without paying some dagoes off apparently. This is my family's, now mine, company. When i showed up at the office for the signup meeting or whatever i was told straight out that my family will betray me and i can only rely on them, they've seen it happen before. Never paid a union due after that. So, fuck them. Fuck them right in the butt. This is also around the same time the President of the Union was arrested for stealing lol

Ok maybe 5 years after i joined

I fucking hate Unions but if your supervisor is in it then you should join to cover your ass as it's a new job. You can always stop paying dues once you're established.

Just join and be one of those lazy faggots

None of the supors or top level Techs are in it. Thats how they rose to the top, by being good workers. Im pretty low on the totem pole and wanna stick at this place for the rest of my career. Its the first company that i feel good about. Its MASSIVE so plenty of opportunities to grow and earn. They gave me a new 2023 4x4 2500, $1500 for uniforms, company credit card, pension, etc. Its a really great opportunity and i dont wanna be one of the lazy faggots. I wanna be making $250k sitting in the office in a few years. I dont want the union holding me back. But it seems like if i join, the company/management/supors will hate me but if i DONT join my coworkers will hate me and put a target on my back. But fuck my coworkers. Im wanna be one of the ones that lets my work ethic speak for itself. I just wasnt sure if there was something i was missing or anything i should know about unions before i reject them.

I've worked in both types of facilities and they're good and bad depending on how the relationship is with management and how the contract was negotiated.

Example of a bad contract. The strikes at lays and Kelloggs were because all of the old timers negotiated a 365 schedule with 12 hour days and could be forced to 16 hours 3 times a week, because they were retiring and it boosted their pension. So that became the business model. They couldn't hire anyone else and with a younger workforce nobody wants to work that kind of shit schedule. The companies had no choice but to keep that schedule in contract negotiations.

The protections are great because there would be people on camera sleeping, jerking off, or pissing in garbage cans and the company couldn't do anything about it since cameras couldn't be used for discipline.

Fuck the coworkers then. Be a company man and reap the rewards.

Unions are the only way not to get fucked by big employers. Collective bargaining is great, fuck shareholders, give more of the profits to the people that actually make the buisness money.

Corrupt unions are obviously a problem, but I'd rather corrupt unions exist than there be no unions at all.

be one of those then.

& there's too much politics in unions. those fat slobs don't deserve legal defence for their slacking behaviour, just because they 'pay their monthly dues'... buncha slobs, let 'em get fired & just employ somebody worthwhile instead.

now you're appealing to the hippy in me.
I guess it's a bit of this... & bit of that.

My opinion (rightly or wrongly) is that unions are mostly fat lazy slobs who want more pay for less work. #ChangeMyMind

They protect good people too. The guy that's been there for 20 years they want to shitcan so they can pay 3 temporary foreigners minimum wage to do it. You can fire a union guy for cause, you just have to prove it.

you make a fair point.

I do think they kinda turned into gangsterism & were corrupted by political influence, even though I generally think they're a good thing
