I've always thought they should bring back old time prison for the worst offenders. Like back when they had to spend the rest of their life in a small room in a dungeon and they only got old bread and water to eat.

I don't really care about the cost aspect of it as the potential cost of recidivism (monetary and human) can be a lot higher. The government already wastes ungodly amounts of money on nonsense projects, they might as well splurge on something that actually protects and improves society.

I personally like the Japanese model where they just pick a random date for execution and don't tell the convict. Every time they hear boots walking down the hall, that could be it. Now that's a fawkin punishment.
