Those jobs are like gold - start at like 80k and most make in the 150k range plus benefits and probably a pension and it’s not like you need a college degree to move large boxes / containers around. Artie Lange was once a long shore man to give you an idea of the “skill set” needed.

In jersey they make around 240 / year. An HVAC mechanic can make well over $350 if he takes the overtime offered. They are asking for a 77% raise over 6 years but their real concern is that the owners will replace them with robots. Pretty sure they will negotiate away the 77% if they can get the ban on automation. Now would be a good time for the owners to start automating everything.

My cousin just retired recently and he worked in a union plant since the 80s making boxes for Amazon and other companies so you can imagine he was pretty busy and got good benefits, a pension, and good hourly wages with lots of OT opportunity and he barely finished high school. There’s people he went to school with that went to college that never made close to what he did and without a pension.
