In jersey they make around 240 / year. An HVAC mechanic can make well over $350 if he takes the overtime offered. They are asking for a 77% raise over 6 years but their real concern is that the owners will replace them with robots. Pretty sure they will negotiate away the 77% if they can get the ban on automation. Now would be a good time for the owners to start automating everything.
I was going off Philly numbers (I know someone who their husband works the ports in Philly) but I can see that for Jersey / NY as that’s a huge spot. Pretty much have to know someone to get one of those jobs but for not having a college degree you can do very well as long as you don’t mind the physical part and dealing with the weather elements.

My cousin just retired recently and he worked in a union plant since the 80s making boxes for Amazon and other companies so you can imagine he was pretty busy and got good benefits, a pension, and good hourly wages with lots of OT opportunity and he barely finished high school. There’s people he went to school with that went to college that never made close to what he did and without a pension.
There's plenty of bad or at least sub optimal with unions but it's worth it if the country wants an actual middle class.

Union members are like vegans, heavily propagandized and repeat whatever their boss says

They rejected a 50 percent raise because they want 80%, daggert is a literal mob guy, it has nothing to do with the middle class you dumb fat fuck

Im sure youd support the horse carriage strikes when cars came along

They rejected a 50% raise bc they wanted automation language. They'll end up roughly at 50% and get something in the deal about automation, it's called negotiation pal

Why shouldn't they earn six figures? They negotiate the contract it's not a handout. I think it's a good thing that more and more blue collar and trade jobs are seeing real wage growth.
Reading comprehension...

I said they ALREADY earn six figures, so they're making good money (therefore striking over wages as if they're currently in the poor house doesn't make sense).

I didn't say they SHOULDN'T earn six figures.

And I'll say it again they were forced to work longer hours during Covid while many workers were furloughed and getting free money or working from home. It's time they receive a dividend from that. Their pay should be dictated by their productivity and the negotiating skill of their leaders, not what an outsider thinks is fair

Yes, and they were compensated well for their labor during the COVID era.

Nurses and grocery store workers got fucked over harder during COVID, I would say

I laugh at them because they're all the same.

Nurses have been threatening to or actually striking all over the country. The problem with grocery store workers is they are unskilled (arguable with longshoremen) while also working a lower impact job. Workers who face more harm and danger should make more, and unionized workers doing hard jobs do make more. I support that. In the northeast a lot of grocery workers are unionized as well

They really didn't, they mostly took off every other day for social distancing

I'd prefer they get the 77% raise and drop the anti-automation thing. I don't like the idea of holding back technology, which, given how this country is going, will be as shitty as self-driving cars so won't impact that many jobs.

I mean, thew cargo containers and cranes longshoreman use are a type of automation. It's not like they are carrying wood barrels over their shoulders out of a sailing ship.

Another good point why these guys should make good money, being in port cities they are high cost of living areas. People keeping the city running shouldn't have to choose between a hovel apartment or a 90 minute drive for a middle class house

They won't negotiate themselves out of a job. The most pro-automation deal they make will probably be something along the lines of "if the employer wishes to automate a position, it will go to a regional or national board. Any of that employees job is approved for automation, they will be offered a likewise position at or above their current pay, with no change to other benefits. The employees seniority will carry over to their new job position." And their will be standard language about union positions being created over the life of the agreement.
