If you're really not comfortable with building your own desktop, then just buy a Steam Deck, a dock, and plug it in. You can get rid of SteamOS and replace it with Windows if you need it. It's $400 for the 256gb deck, $80 for a dock, and $40 for a 512gb MicroSD. There you go.
That's what I contemplated before getting the Ally X. I wanted something that's at least 1 terabyte handheld and the 1tb Steam deck is $150 cheaper than the Ally X but the Ally X is much more powerful. The Steam deck is OLED, but I don't care about that because I dock Ally to an OLED TV when using the desktop mode anyway.

The Ally screen is a better resolution and has a higher refresh rate than the OLED steam deck and it's definitely noticeable.

$800 sounds like a lot, but I really am impressed with the technology and power a handheld PC can have.

It’s so off putting battling all the bloat
If that's your holdup then your best bet is to buy whatever and install https://massgrave.dev/ LTSC(not working for me) or enterprise. BTW I've read that the 14th gen Intel chips crash all the time and 7xxx and above Ryzens get hotter than your oven so you may want to buy older/used stuff. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/ is your friend

Edit: after connecting to the internet after first install Windows will install some OEM bloatware programs that it counts as drivers so you will still have to remove a few things.

Edit 2: you will want a firewall program like https://github.com/henrypp/simplewall/releases to block telemetry/spyware bullshit

You have a degree in computer science and you can't build a computer and don't know "what's new"? lmao.
I'm loathe to defend NB but hardware =////= software stuff and software =///= software. He probably deals with databases or COBOL or some shit all day long. I doubt he has ever had to deal with low level IT stuff for his job, much less physical repairs.
you can charge them with a USB cable
Literally any laptop post 2018 can do this. (usb-c power delivery)

I don’t have the will power to research everything, put it together and clean install it myself. I also realised it was worse than I could imagine if you buy something from best buy off the shelf where you’re basically just buying an aggressive advertising campaign of useless bullshit they are paid to push on people. T
Unfortunately, we are in the era of "want it done right? gotta do it yourself". What printer did you get?
Planned obsolecense.
What's going on now makes you want to avoid new stuff at all costs.

Computer games can be fun. I can play Flight Simulator for hours.
Flight sims seem really cool, they'd probably be my thing. Although I do like chatting to people, but 13yr olds on 'teamspeak' aint my thing.

I don't know if I just like the sound of my own voice, or just appreciate the skillfully evocative conveyance I provide

There are a lot of computer science majors that are tech illiterate. They code and that's the extent of it. I have seen several fine programs who had no idea how to access remote desktop for their job when remote work became more common.

That's pretty wild, must draw too much power then. I have a bunch of old enterprise laptops from 2018-17 that all do USB-C.
yeah the power brick is 240w, i think most of fast charge phones are 60w, macbook air draws about 30w. lots of trickery going on in the gaming laptop space, intel cpus isnt as power efficient as the equivalent AMD cpus, so if you get a intel laptop with a dGPU they have to clock down the GPU

For the record I think it’s good @BenDovid recognised he wasn’t well and got help. I’m just bustin’ balls.

I also kicked the benzo’s before they became a real problem, and it wasn’t easy, I can’t imagine the hell of having a full physical addiction to them.
I do agree with all that, but this is ONAforums so you know I gotta bust balls too
