Do black people ever consider practicality when it comes to making an important purchase, like an automobile?

We had to go to regular sales training seminars and they would tell us how car salesman are seen as complete shit when it comes to be trustworthy and I’m not denying that, I saw some real bad shit - dealerships doing lots of borderline illegal stuff like sending out fake recall letters to get people in the store in hopes they trade their car in and buy a new one while getting their “recall” repaired. They pay marketing companies to get people in and don’t care if what they’re doing is unethical or illegal. The fake re call one was done over 10 years and I hope that one is no longer done because it was all kinds of wrong. They would send out the recall letters that looked very close to the real ones and used vague language in hopes to avoid a lawsuit.

If Ford (or anyone) could sell direct to customers, and they had an experience which was see the listed price and pay it, dealerships would be decimated, there’s obviously benefits in terms of servicing and repairs but I fucking hate going to them, you get about 15 iterations of price before the final one.

I was also told that if you make the deal near the end of the month and tell them you will buy the car immediately you can push them by making them think you won't sign that month, a few days later and they have to wait another month for their commission. So I'd only sign this month if they accepted my offer and stopped trying to negotiate.
End of the month is the best time to buy, they want to hit their numbers - this is even bigger if its the end of the quarter as the people up top get bigger bonuses if they hit their sales numbers. I remember a Saturday end of the month / end of quarter day we sold something like 43 cars that day. Most places a good Saturday is 14-17 cars. Of course we were there from 8am to 8pm but we did it.

I worked one place that thought it was great idea to NOT put prices on the used cars and claim it’s a “cutting edge technology” that we’re doing “live” pricing which you wouldn’t know until you were committed to buy. Of course it was a disaster as people don’t want to look at car that they have no idea what the cost is and we can’t even tell them. That’s a lot of the old thinking that dealerships still use - just get them in the car and they’ll pay whatever we tell them it is! No stupid, doesn’t work that way anymore. Dealerships out there still hope the internet goes away, one place I worked claimed the internet was only for “weak” dealers and even weaker sales people. Even worse we’re dealership internet sales teams - they would say whatever it takes to get someone in (even tell them we have cars that were already sold, can be 250 a month with no money down on a 55k car, etc) because they got paid as long as the person showed up. Hated those fucks.

Holy shit we did that same thing for our used cars. No price on the car, used sales dropped dramatically and we eventually went back to pricing them.

Selling cars today must suck. Everyone has pricing before walking into the place. I stopped in the early around 2013 because it was becoming impossible to make a decent commission and selling volumes isn't all that great. I'd rather sell 20 in a month and make $8k instead of selling 30 cars and making the same.

I knew it wasn’t an original idea from the jackass GM my store so I’m not surprised other places thought it was a good idea. Of course the people enforcing these dumb ideas don’t have to deal with the customers. They really thought it was like it was 30 years ago where it’s “price doesn’t sell the car and it’s your fault if you can’t!” No stupid, people want a car that’s in this price range and I’m gonna show them what fits, not “live pricing” which was just a number pulled out your ass.

I got out around 2015 so I can’t even imagine what it’s like now but I don’t miss it. Funny to watch dealerships actually think they could fight and beat the internet. One place would have a lower price online and would have us find out if they saw the low price online and if they didn’t we could charge them more. Of course people would look it up on there phone and call us out for lying. One place I worked actually had signs on the doors and showroom floor telling them cell phone use is prohibited because the dealership said it “messed” with our computers / wires / etc so don’t use it on the showroom floor. Of course that didn’t stop anyone from using their phones.

Did you guys ever encounter this trick some fuckkkinnnnn' sscccccuuummbbagggg did to me in about 2012... I was looking at possibly trading my car in for a little truck and to get the trade-in they said they needed my keys. I thought they needed to pop the hood or something and didn't think about it.

Eventually I got a real bad vibe from the place and decided to bail. Got up and put my hands in my pockets to leave and realized I didn't have my keys. Asked for the keys and the fucker wouldn't give them to me. Told me to sit down and the manager would talk to me.

I eventually had to stand up and just repeatedly say "I want my keys. Please give me my keys" over and over and the sleazy shithead manager came out and finally gave them to me.

We didn't have guest wifi and we were in an old building and we tried that strategy. The dealership didn't take into consideration people going outside to get a good signal and browsing pricing there. It was hilarious to watch technology eviscerate car dealerships.

Older salesmen would tell stories about hiding keys, but we never even attempted to try it when I worked. I worked just outside of Boston and we dealt with people who were rough around the edges and didn't want to piss people off.

Yeah, it felt like an old-timey vintage trick. I was a young guy at the time, so I guess they thought they'd pull out an old-school bully trick.

That shithole dealership probably went out of business in like 2016 if they were still up to antics like that in 2012.

Oh yeah, plenty of places used to do that kind of shit of hiding the trade in keys so you can’t leave. I doubt they still do that but you’d be surprised how many dealerships can’t adapt to the times and still holding on to hope the internet will go away.

I knew a couple older guys that had the used car manager throw the keys on the roof

And they’re still hoping the internet will somehow go away, you dealerships out there that still rely on fax machines for everything. I’m glad they finally have to deal with the fact the customer has the advantage and if they pull shady shit they will get blasted on review websites for being assholes. I tried to be as truthful and honest as possible but it doesn’t help when your sales mgrs are scumbags who will lie their ass off to your customer and you have to deal with it whrn they realize they’re getting screwed.

I was very successful with customers. Even when I made a decent commission, they always felt as if I went out of my way to hook them up. I think it helped that I was a younger Puerto Rican who looked like a drug dealer who only use the car sales job as an excuse to make up an excuse for drug profits (they wouldn't have been wrong to assume that) so I came off as less of a scumbag in a shitty tacky outfit and slicked hair.

I love the fags that complain about the dealership model and how much they hate negotiating. I worked at a store where we did the "one price" model a la Carmax, etc. - all of our new and used cars were priced noticeably below market at a "haggle free" price and we'd give folks a printout of equivalent cars for sale in a 300 mile radius to show how we got our numbers. Totally transparent at every step. We got a lot of calls from out of state as a result.

People STILL insisted on playing tough guy negotiator like they were in the movies. It was always fun to let them know I sold the car to someone else while they were playing games. Our average turnaround on a used car was 10 days and that included reconditioning.

The dealership model will never go away because people LOVE negotiating. Salesmen are scum but buyers are worse by a long shot. So many stories from my time in the business.

Oh I do miss people who still thought it was still the 1980s when they bought a car. I remember making some moron look like a complete ass because he asked for the Carfax on a NEW car. I went out of my way to make him look stupid by bringing a manager to explain how vehicle history reports worked.
